An illustrated alphabet inspired by the most interesting buildings and historic landmarks in Taiwan.
The architecture of a place is not only a product of the culture, but also reflects the history and the way people live. Taiwanese architectural style influences range from Chinese, Japanese, Western, postmodern to the latest trends based on different periods of history. Almost every style of architecture can be seen in Taiwan. This inspired me to create an alphabet featuring 26 Taiwanese buildings that represent different periods from Dutch and Spanish settlement, Qing Dynasty, Japanese Rule to Republic of China. This collection provides information about the architecture and photographs of the structures, and it also serves as a travel guide for people who are interested in Taiwanese architecture.
THE VISUAL SYSTEM
After selecting some classic buildings, I matched the letter to each building with the first letter of their name.
The letters were modeled on the typeface Brandon Grotesque Black as the foundation for each letter design. By picking up the most iconic elements of each building, I created a system that works well on different colored backgrounds. After designing the whole alphabet, the letterforms were featured in a book that includes the photos of the actual structure, its location, history background and the use of each building.
