THE WELCOME TABLE

A community partnership project with ST. James School, a faith-based middle school in North Philadelphia.

The Welcome Table is a on-campus community resource center where people share cares and take what they need. Graduate students in Graphic and Interactive Design Program at Tyler School of Art and Architecture collaborate with St. James School in every spring semester. During our time working with students, the whole branding project includes posters, recipe cards, magnets and large-scale mural arts. After its completion, a $5,000 donation was made to St. James School. During the pandemic, The Welcome Table become more important to the community, which helps the neighborhood get through this difficult time.

The Welcome Table 是一間校園內的社區資源中心,這中心提供了場所給大家分享和索取資源。每年在泰勒藝術學院的平面與互動設計學院的秋季課程,會和St. James School合作完成項目。在和學校裡的學生合作過程中,這整個項目包括了海報、食譜、磁鐵和大型壁畫等。在項目結束後,為學校募得了價值$5,000元美金的募款。在這疫情期間,The Welcome Table變得更為重要,幫助了整個社區度過這段艱難的生活。

VISIT THE SITE

THE BEGINNING

After meeting with the school leadership, we collaborated with the students to brainstorm the name of the care center.

Before they start to sketch or draw anything, we gave a brief lecture about how designers usually brainstormed the name of the logo by using bubble diagrams and different forms of logo. After the activity, we selected the sketches they drew and pulled out some elements, such as the table, heart and kitchenware. We then create a system that has a rich color palette and fits in different occasions by replacing different elements inside the logo.
初期階段

在和學校的高層開完會之後,我們和學校裡的學生一起腦力激盪,為這個中心取名字。

我們在學生們開始動筆之前,為他們簡單地講解設計師是如何利用氣泡圖腦力激盪想出名字和解釋不同形式的logo。在活動結束後,我和我的團隊挑選出他們想出來的草稿和元素,例如:桌子、愛心和廚具用品。接著,我們創作出一套有著多種顏色的設計系統,並且能在logo裡替換元素,以便不同場合使用。

SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM

To solve the storage and organizing problems, we make magnets to label each categories.

We listed out different categories for each donated item they usually get and write them on rectangle magnets. Then, we sticked them on wood crates and shelves to organize. We also did icon magnets on three fridges to show which items are stored inside. These magnets can be swap out or add on anytime. To carry the items home, we make screen-printed tote bags with the same icons on the fridge magnets. We also make a large wall poster about nutritions and create a few recipe cards that people can make based on the food inside The Welcome Table.

為了解決儲存和整理問題,我們團隊為每項捐贈用品設計了磁鐵標籤。

我們團隊為學校常見的捐贈用品,用方形磁鐵分門別類。接著,我們把磁鐵吸附在木製板條箱和架上來整理,並且在冰箱上也吸附了圖像磁鐵來顯示冰箱裡有什麼食物。這些磁鐵都能隨時替換或是增加。我們也設計出和冰箱上有一項圖像的網版印刷帆布包,來裝這些捐贈物品。 我們也在牆上設計一張巨型營養海報和能利用中心內的捐贈食物所參考的食譜。
